Summer Arrived with a Splash in The Park at LeDroit

Thank you to everyone who came out this past Saturday, June 5 to the park to welcome summer and enjoy the official opening of the splash pad! The event was hosted in collaboration with fellow community groups: Common Good City Farm, LeDroit Park Civic Association, and Uniting Our Youth. There were fun craft activities for kids, a wonderful ribbon cutting for the renovated park, and lots of splashing!

The Friends of the Park at LeDroit would like to thank Councilmember Nadeau and Commissioner Handerhan for joining us, and for their support for this project and our park. We’d also like to thank Bacio Pizzeria for generously providing free pizza for guests at the event. Please return the favor on behalf of our community by supporting their business.

Yoga in the Park

The Park at LeDroit is hosting two weekly yoga classes – on Wednesdays at 5:30PM and Thursdays at 12:00PM. The classes are offered by FiveMedicine, a Telehealth company. Classes are donation-based, with all experience levels welcome. You can register online at this link or walk-in attendance is also welcome. In addition, FiveMedicine will be offering free Covid19 vaccination and testing clinics to support health and wellness in the LeDroit Park community.

This Summer: Youth Camp Coming to the Park

This past year has been especially challenging for underserved children and families in our community, including many who use the Park at LeDroit. So, this summer the Friends of the Park at LeDroit is supporting a 6-week summer camp for youth ages 10-16 in collaboration with Common Good City Farm, the LeDroit Park Civic Association and Uniting Our Youth.

The summer camp will be offered by Uniting Our Youth from their offices in the Kelly Miller Residences, with visits to the Park at LeDroit and Common Good City Farm. Over the course of six weeks, campers will learn about four countries: Mexico, Japan, Ghana, Jamaica, and Israel. Each group will conduct research about the country and prepare a presentation and skit, experience one favorite food item from that country and listen to native music. Campers will also plant a love and peace garden in the park and will make a pledge to be stewards of the Park at LeDroit.

We are thrilled to have been able to contribute financially to support the camp, and to be able to host the campers in the park. We would also like to extend an enormous thank you to members of the community who helped to raise funds to make the camp possible.

Join Us, and Get Involved with the Park at LeDroit

There are so many ways to get involved with the park, from regular participation to one-time projects and events, to making a donation. Currently, the Friends of the Park at LeDroit is looking for volunteer Board Members for the roles of Treasurer and Events Coordinator. We are also looking for a volunteer to run our tree watering program to help establish the grove we planted last year. The time commitment for all of these positions is about 2-5 hours per month, and getting involved with the park is a wonderful way to meet new neighbors and friends while supporting the community. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, or if you are interested in volunteering in other ways please email us at theparkatledroit@gmail.com or sign up on our website at www.theparkatledroit.com/get-involved.

The Friends of the Park at LeDroit is also fundraising to be able to host additional events this summer at the park similar to the wonderful party this past weekend, including movie nights and a readathon – and we’re open to hosting other events as well if community members have ideas. If you would like to contribute financially to our efforts, we welcome donations (tax deductible) of any size: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=JNSCMFGN9ZZFS
