Winter 2020 Newsletter

Exciting New Improvements at The Park at LeDroit are Here, and More are Coming Soon! As you may have seen, the Park at LeDroit is undergoing renovations with temporary fencing in place around the playgrounds and the center of the park. The wait will soon be over, with improvements scheduled to be complete in early January, and with the little kids' playground opening back up this week! The upgrades include large shade sails for both playgrounds, a seasonally activated splash pad for the kids, as well as improved seating, landscaping, lighting and beatification measures.

The improvements are the culmination of two years of advocacy by and coordination between The Friends of the Park at LeDroit, Councilmember Nadeau, The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), and Le Droit Park community members and neighbors who provided feedback.

The project is being overseen by the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the Department of General Services (DGS). For more details, see the community presentation at this link: https://dgs.dc.gov/page/park-ledroit-phase-2. Thank you for your continued patience; there are great things to come at The Park at LeDroit! Thank You to Our Anonymous “Strange Neighbors”

We were heartened by the kindness of our community when an anonymous neighbor made repairs to the little library after it was vandalized in June. This is the note they left:

dear neighbors, we repaired this little free library with our own money and lack of woodworking skills because we love it so much and were sad to see it destroyed. please take care of it, and each other, during these uncertain times. “that is part of the beauty of all literature. you discover that your longing are universal longings, that you’re not lonely and isolated from anyone. you belong.” – f. scott fitzterald words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of inflicting injury, and remedying it. BLACK LIVES MATTER Love,

Your strange neighbors

Thank you to our wonderful community for supporting the park! Enjoying The Park at LeDroit in a COVID-19 World While the programming we had planned for this spring, summer and fall had to be canceled due to COVID-19, we have been delighted to see friends and neighbors using the park in a safe, socially distant way. It has been great to see people enjoying the grass at the opening of the park and the new field, the exercise equipment, dogs frolicking in the dog park, and to see the wonderful successes our gardening friends have had at the LeDroit Park Community Garden. In a time when it is hard for many to find activities outside the home, we have been happy to see the park being used by many members of the community, and we encourage and welcome all friends and neighbors to enjoy the space in a safe way. We Need YOU! We are seeking more volunteers, board members, and committee members. If you want to contribute, please email us at theparkatledriot@gmail.com or sign up on our website at www.theparkatledroit.com/get-involved.

The Park has been here for you during these difficult times - will you consider helping it with a tax-deductible donation? Donations for the Park can be made at: greenspacesfordc.org/friends-of-the-park-at-ledroit.
